How We Test

Our testing is designed to answer a single question: what gets you safe, flavorful meals to the table fastest and most consistently, with the least cost and complexity? To do that, we use standardized trials, instrumented measurements where practical, and transparent scoring.

Core Protocols

  • Total Time-to-Eat: We record preheat, pressure-hold, and release phases for every test, because dinner isn’t ready until the lid opens safely.
  • Time–Thickness Mapping: We calibrate times by ingredient thickness rather than weight alone (e.g., bean soak state and size; meat slab thickness), then validate across pot sizes and models.
  • Release-Method Adjustments: We model differences between Natural Release, Timed Natural + Quick, and Quick Release, including texture and moisture effects.
  • Altitude Conversions: We adjust for boiling-point changes using a simple input (your elevation) and publish conversion tables our Timing Converter uses automatically.

Test Suite

  • Staples: Pinto/black/chickpeas; white/brown rice; chicken thighs; pork shoulder; broths.
  • Techniques: Pot-in-pot grains and custards; layered braises and reductions to avoid “soupy” outcomes; batch-cooking templates for meal prep.
  • Stress & Safety: Sealing reliability, overheat/BURN behavior, lid-lock and pressure indicators, vent ergonomics, and error recovery.

Measurements and Tools

Where practical we use calibrated scales, timers, thermometers/thermocouples, and energy monitors to track doneness, repeatability, and energy-per-meal. We log ambient conditions and pot size, then repeat across multiple units when available.

Scoring and Weights

We weight criteria by real-world impact:

  • 35% Speed & Consistency (time-to-eat, repeatability across batches)
  • 25% Safety & Controls (lock behavior, venting, overheat protection, clarity of alerts)
  • 20% Cost of Ownership (replacement parts availability, energy-per-meal, cleaning time)
  • 10% Flavor & Texture (as validated by panel tastings and reduction potential)
  • 10% Usability (interface legibility, presets that actually help, manual clarity)

Reproducibility and Transparency

We publish key assumptions with each result (altitude, thickness, pot size, liquid), plus changelogs when firmware or parts shift outcomes. Our public tools—the Cooker Fit Finder and Timing Converter—are powered by the same datasets you see summarized in our tables.

Limitations

Home kitchens vary. Older gaskets, hard water, and voltage fluctuations can change outcomes. Our guidance includes ranges and recovery steps to keep you safe and on track even when conditions differ.
